![]() ![]() That's much less complicated than diagnosing and solving engine problems, two skills beyond my training and instincts. Most repairs simply require fine-grit sandpaper and fresh varnish. Plus, when it needs fixing, I can do everything myself. Maybe that's why I've used the cedar boat far more than "the big boat" these past 10 years. What about my other, more modern boat? I'm forever fixing its live-well, upgrading its battery, replacing its bilge pump, and hauling it to marinas for engine repairs. As long as you're fit enough to row or paddle, you'll get where you're going. Then again, perhaps the greatest charm of a light-riding cedar craft is its reliability. Some wooden-boat purists aren't impressed, I realize, but neither am I charmed by water seeping through seams not yet swollen by the new season. And it owes much of its enduring gleam to multiple coats of varnish applied before its launch. Granted, it owes much of its strength and durability to fiberglass cloth and epoxy resins protecting its hull, inside and out. Well, my boat is now entering its 10th summer, and it has shaken off enough hard knocks, roiling waves and inept rowing to convince me it's as seaworthy as any boat afloat, and more so than one I abandoned long ago. Then again, maybe I thought the same thing in 2006, when I launched my homemade rowboat after 2 1/ 2 years of on-again, off-again construction. DXF files for all components are pre nested into sized bounding boxes ready for importing to CAD software for CNC cutting. It contains an illustrated PDF document showing assembly of the parts and a 3D STEP model for referencing the general assembly and location of all components. The boat building plan set is for a plywood skinned version of Playboy MkII. This boat is available to purchase as a digital download boat building plan, all files are downloadable directly at the checkout. All of the seat supports are a little more styled than the original ones and are notched into the frames to give a positive alignment when building the boat. There are several parts that I have improved upon from the original plans, particularly with respect to modern manufacturing methods. I have made several small corrections to the measurements of frame heights, but other than that the hull and general layout is as per the original. Playboy MkII is much the same as the original design. The space up the middle also allows ample space for gear such as Skis. The hull is a lovely stable design that will allow you to stand on her side deck as you get in the boat without it wanting to throw you out! Space is great in Playboy, particularly for such a small boat, we often did river trips in her with 6 people on board which is good going for a 13ft boat I would say! The aft bench seat layout allows the diver access to the engine even if there are 6 people on board. The end result will leave you with a sensibly sized boat that can be easily trailered, manoeuvred and launched but is still big enough for day trips with the family.Īfter building my own version of Playboy in 2012 we used the boat quite extensively on lakes, rivers and the sea. Playboy is a great little boat, a perfect first time boat build that can be done in a garage sized workshop. The design is for an outboard powered, open utility runabout with seating for up to 6 people. Playboy MkII is a modernised plywood boat building plan, based on the original design of Playboy by William Jackson. ![]()
